Do you need to have several teeth pulled, but don’t want to wait weeks for your new dentures to be ready? You may benefit from getting dentures on the same day as your dentist extracts your teeth.
Immediate dentures can help bring the smile back to your face after having your teeth pulled. For best results, learn all you can about immediate dentures.
What are Immediate Dentures?
Immediate dentures are partial or complete dentures that you receive and wear the same day as you have your teeth pulled. Also known as temporary dentures, immediate dentures provide a number of benefits you can enjoy until you receive your permanent dentures. You can eat and talk as normal, for example – and you can smile brightly.
You’ll need to wear immediate dentures without taking them out for the first 24 hours after getting your teeth removed. The temporary denture will prevent your gums from swelling up and prevent you from putting your immediate dentures back in your mouth. After your mouth heals, you can wear your immediate dentures as normal. Temporary dentures are strong enough to last six to eight months, which probably much longer than you will need them.
Immediate dentures require preparation
Immediate dentures do require several visits before you have your teeth extracted. During these visits, our team of dental professionals will measure the dimensions of your mouth, take bite impressions, and assess the shade of your teeth to ensure your immediate and permanent dentures match your natural teeth. You may have to have some teeth removed prior to receiving your immediate dentures to give your mouth time to heal.
Having one or more teeth removed is traumatic on your gums, but especially on your jaw bone. Gum tissue will begin to heal within 14 to 21 days; your jaw bone will begin to heal about a week after extraction and new bone will nearly fill the hole in about 10 weeks.
The gap in your jaw bone left behind by the extraction of large teeth, such as the molars at the back of your mouth, will take longer to heal than the extraction of smaller incisors and canine teeth at the front of your mouth. The hole in your jaw bone left created by the removal of impacted teeth, which are teeth that do not fully emerge from your gums, also take longer to heal. To give these teeth time to heal before getting your immediate dentures, our dentist may recommend having your back molars or impacted teeth pulled a few weeks before having the rest of your teeth extracted.
Benefits of Immediate Dentures
Replacing missing teeth is always a good idea, and replacing them right away with immediate dentures offers a number of benefits, including:
- Never having to appear in public without your dazzling smile
- Looking just like your own teeth, as it is easier to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth while they are still in your mouth
- Acting like a pressure bandage to stop bleeding and protect the tissue in your mouth
- Allowing you to establish your speech patterns early in your denture-wearing experience
- Improving your ability to chew with dentures right away, instead of subsiding on ground or soft foods while you wait for your new dentures
- Minimizing any facial distortion that can occur as the result of missing teeth
- Maintaining your self-esteem and lifestyle
Is getting my teeth pulled and getting dentures the same day right for me?
Immediate dentures may not be right for everyone. You might be a great candidate for immediate dentures if you:
- Have experienced significant tooth loss, but otherwise have healthy gum tissue and bone
- Want to be able to smile, eat, talk, and laugh freely and without embarrassment while you wait for your permanent dentures
- Love to eat your favorite foods without struggling with missing teeth
- Are worried that missing teeth will change the shape of your face
- Don’t want to wait weeks for your dentures
Our team of dentists will consider a number of factors when determining if you are a good candidate for immediate dentures. These factors include:
- Your age
- Your emotional health and mental state
- Whether you have certain oral health conditions, such as an unbalanced bite, acute gum disease, or bone loss
- Any physical issues you may have, such as dealing with a health condition, undergoing specific treatments, or experiencing heart issues or blood clotting problems
